The four elements are important on Iceland; it is part of the folklore tradition and historically related to the first migration. The history of Iceland is a long and adventurous saga. The settlement of Iceland begun in the second half of the 9th century when Norse settlers migrated across the North Atlantic. The shortage of arable land in Scandinavia may have been the reason. Unlike Britain and Ireland, Iceland was unsettled land and could be claimed easily. With that history in respect we will draw special attention to how Icelandic photobased artists are using and developing their concepts within the four elements – earth, air, fire and water. The exhibition showcase works by eleven Icelandic artists of different generations.
